Although, the health care professionals carry the prime responsibility of assessing clinical deterioration in a patient and initiate prompt action, the role of family in the same cannot be missed out (Albutt et al., 2016, pp. 820). This is because, the family act as the primary caregiver and can maintain continuous vigilance even when health care professionals are not around and occupied by any other critical patient (Albutt et al., 2016, pp. 820). The NSQHS standard; recognising and responding to clinical deterioration is of utmost importance in understanding the role of family in assessing and communication signs of deterioration in a patient (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, 2017; standard 9).

The standard has four major criteria; establishing recognition and response systems, recognising clinical deterioration and escalating care, responding to clinical deterioration and communicating with patients and carers. The aspect; recognising clinical deterioration and escalating care brings light to the role of both health care professionals and family in noting the signs of clinical deterioration and to be able to intervene promptly (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, 2017; standard 9). Similarly, the aspect where there is responding to clinical deterioration and provision of appropriate and timely care can be smoothened and prompt when the family members are involved (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, 2017; standard 9). This requires the health care professionals to be able to communicate with patients and caregivers. In order to seek family participation and support in assessing clinical deterioration, the health care professionals must provide complete information of recognition and response systems which can easily contribute to the process of escalating care (Vorwerk & King, 2016, pp. 39).
